Valorization of Carbon Dioxide and Dinitrogen by Cooperative Bimetallic Catalysts

Cambio climático y energías renovables

Investigador Principal: Jesús Campos Manzano

Abstract

A

dvances in chemical science and technology has enhanced our capacity to transform matter with unprecedented limits. However, the efficient conversion of some simple and abundant molecules, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and dinitrogen (N₂), remains a fundamental challenge in modern chemistry. These molecules are essential for addressing critical issues such as climate change and the energy crisis. Therefore, it is crucial to develop new and original approaches for their efficient valorization. This project will investigate the joint catalytic transformation of CO₂ and N₂ using innovative heterobimetallic catalysts.

Heterobimetallic catalysts offer unique opportunities for transforming particularly inert molecules like CO₂ and N₂. Nevertheless, the chemistry of heterobimetallic systems is still in an early stage of development compared to conventional homobimetallic or monometallic systems. This project will focus on the application of bimetallic systems based on iron (an abundant and cost-effective metal), acting synergistically with a second highly electrophilic metal. The activation of CO₂ and N₂ will be explored under thermal, electrochemical, and photochemical conditions, maximizing the opportunities for the valorization of these molecules and proposing, for the first time, their catalytic coupling.

This project will not only open new pathways for the utilization of renewable resources but also represent a significant advancement in sustainable chemical production, contributing to the development of environmentally friendly processes with important economic and environmental impacts.
