The approval of the European Union's Water Framework Directive in 2000 highlights the need of integrated water policy initiatives at European scale. It is a landmark for all Member States that are in the process of formulating and addressing their water resources problems. In the case of Spain, three widely different attempts to plan and manage water resources at a national scale have been made in 15 years. During this period, water demands grew significantly, and the Spanish society has suffered serious infrastructure bottlenecks and growing environmental problems.

The objective of the scientific meeting is to identify, analyze and discuss the most relevant scientific and technical challenges that the international community is facing in achieving a sustainable and efficient use of water resources in a world context of high population growth and increasing water demand.

Aplication

The meeting is intended to attract specialists, managers and experts who have direct responsibility in scientific projects or in the implementation of water policies. Therefore, the meeting is directed towards research centers and universities, Basin authorities and other government agencies, as well as engineering and environmental consulting firms. The meeting's program focuses on an integrated approach to water problems from a global perspective in relation to economic and technology issues but it also takes into account the new challenges and opportunities of Spain's water policies

Applications should be sent using the standardized form provided and should be accompanied by a short CV of the applicant (of no more than 5 pages). Attendance is free of charge. In order to ensure that participants will make the most out of the meeting, only up to 35 applicants will be admitted, following the scientific organizers' proposal made in view of the applicants' academic and professional background.

The meeting will take place at the site of the Fundación Ramón Areces. Applicants not residing in Madrid may apply for a travel grant, in the amount of 300 euros, so as to partially finance their participation. These grants will be allocated by the Fundación Ramón Areces, in view of the scientific organizers' recommendation, and the decision will be communicated at the same time as that on admission to the meeting.
