In the field of Life and Matter Sciences, the Foundation finances developing subjects that require significant basic research efforts, and simultaneously promotes clinical or applied research with the goal of obtaining results that improve people's quality of life.
In 2019, €5,186,909 were awarded to 42 new projects in the 19th national competition for scientific and technical research. The researches focused on the following topics: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Molecular Etiology and Novel Treatments; Food security and biotechnology; Graphene, atoms, clusters and metallic nanoparticles: Fundamental Basis and Applications; High-temperature superconducting materials; Intercellular Dialogue and Interactome: Pathological Implications; Precision Medicine and Cancer; Rare diseases; Renewable energy: materials and processes and Sepsis: Early Warning, Prevention and Treatment.
Another 50 projects from the 18th national competition for scientific and technical research were active in 2019. In the last twelve years, the Fundación Ramón Areces has financed 268 projects in the field of Life and Matter Sciences and has allocated a total of 29 million euros.
