  • Description
  • Programme

Increased activity in the latter field and the subsequent need to understand the pathophysiology of these myocardial diseases has prompted interest in the former. Introduction of new diagnostic tools in the field of pathology, nuclear medicine and molecular biology has enabled the discovery of new mechanisms of disease in cardiomyopathies, heart failure and rejection. This has prompted reassessment of established issues or allowed confirmation of hypothesis which were put forward for several years but could not find the appropriate audience or the proper technology to be clarified. Such is the case of the morphological structure of the heart as a complex and twisted muscular band or the nature of the muscle disease in the context of systemic hypertension.

Appreciation of these new concepts have led to new forms of therapy, to the appreciation of how some drugs interact with the host to produce the desirable effect, or to envisage future lines directed to cure or prevent both myocardial diseases or rejection after transplantation. The present Symposium, in joining some of the investigators involved in pioneer work in several fields of medicine, provides a state-of-the art insight into the constantly evolving field of heart failure and transplantation. It will be of interest to students and scientists with a background on biology, internal medicine, cardiology, cardiac surgery, nuclear medicine, pharmacy or genetics.
