Description
Neurotrophins are growth factors that include nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived growth factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and neurotrophin 4/5 (NT-4/5), which are involved in the correct development and functioning of the nervous system. During development, neurotrophins play crucial roles in neuronal survival, proliferation, differentiation and axonal growth whereas in adulthood they modulate higher order functions and circuits that underlie synaptic transmission and plasticity and metabolism. In addition, they have been implicated in different human pathologies, such as pain insensitivity, obesity, neuropsychiatric disorders, mood disorders, depression, bipolar disease and schizophrenia, as well as neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases.
This International Symposium will bring together a diverse panel of leading international and national scientists to discuss new discoveries and novel therapeutic strategies involving neurotrophins and their receptors. Among the topics that will be addressed at this conference are those related with the role of neurotrophic factors in nervous system development, depression, Huntington's disease, obesity, pain and motor neuron disease. This Symposium will provide new insights and new ideas that will facilitate the application of neurotrophin biology to health and disease.
