Life and Matter Sciences International Symposium November 24 - 25, 1998 Madrid
From the sixties and for many years later the idea of a single neurotransmitter released from a specific cerebral pathway and being responsible for a specific function and pathology has prevailed.
Organized by:
Fundación Ramón Areces
Coordinator/s:
Francisco MoraDepartamento de Fisiología. Universidad Complutense. Madrid.
From the eighties and after showing the coexistence and simultaneous release of several neurotransmitters from the same presynaptic terminal these concepts have changed significantly. Nowdays we know that a function or series of functions codified in specific circuits of the brain are mediated by the synaptic and volumetric interactions of various neurotransmitter systems.
The interaction of neurotransmitters is the focus of an intense research in neurobiology. Particularly the interaction between glutamate, dopamine and GABA in different areas of the brain have received special atention because of their implications in the altered neurochemical substrates involved in the pathology of several diseases such as Parkinson disease, schizophrenia or aging of the brain. Similarly, the interaction among these neurotransmitters has been relevant for understanding the cerebral circuits activated by drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines. This symposium will focus on all the aspects set above.
